The Augusta Youth Athletics (AYA) Stars program experienced both joy and heartbreak in the Georgia Games girls basketball championships, Sunday at Bernie Ward Community Center.
Javonna Kent scored 11 points and Shay Rawls added 10 to give the Stars a 49-36 victory over the LaGrange Wolverines in the 15-and-under title game. The 13-and-under Stars did not fare as well, falling to the College Park Ballers, 50-45.
The younger Stars squad led, 41-33, after three quarters, but the Ballers engineered a stunning comeback, outscoring the Stars, 17-4, in the final period. Cherelle Ferris scored 17, including a trio of fourth quarter three-pointers, to lead College Park.
The loss came after the Stars defeated the Ballers by two points in an earlier contest Sunday.
AYA (13-U) coach Caroltte Fields could not hide her disappointment after the game.
"It's tough because we came so close," Fields said. "We thought we should've beaten them again. It's a good learning experience."
As bitter as the loss was for the 13-and-under Stars, it could not overshadow the sweet taste of victory for the 15-and-under team.
After trailing, 20-19, at halftime, the elder Stars outscored LaGrange, 21-4, in the third quarter, and coasted to an easy, 13-point win.
"We knew we could do it," said Rawls, a rising freshman at Cross Creek High School. "We worked together as a team and never gave up when we were down."
The Georgia Games gold medal is not the first major championship the team has claimed. Last year, the Stars won the Georgia AAU Shootout in Atlanta, qualifying them to compete for the national championship in Orlando, Fla.
The South Augusta Goals took the 17-and-under gold medal with a 60-52 victory over the Carolina Hustlers. The Panthers (10-U) and Dream Team Blue (12-U) also won championships.
