Bats can't back up Clark's gem
Lefty gets no support from Jackets' offense

Augusta GreenJackets starter Craig Clark needed a good outing Saturday night after giving up seven earned runs in his past 5q innings.

The tall left-hander got the strong performance he was looking for, but a win escaped him again in a 1-0 loss to the Hagerstown Suns.

"Our pitching staff continues to be the reason we're still in this thing," GreenJackets manager Andy Skeels said. "Craig Clark had one of his best outings of the year."

Clark took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and faced only one batter over the minimum through 5q innings, but his clean slate, shutout and shot at a win all came to an end with one swing of Travis Reagan's bat. The Suns' No. 9 hitter launched a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall to break up Clark's no-hit bid with one out in the sixth inning.

Clark kept his composure and left the game after seven innings with seven strikeouts and only two hits allowed, but the southpaw still trailed 1-0.

The GreenJackets couldn't respond and stranded all four of their baserunners in their fourth shutout loss of the second half of the season.

The loss, combined with Friday night's rain-delayed, 12-inning defeat, marked the first time the GreenJackets lost a home series since the first week of June.

Skeels pointed the blame directly at the GreenJackets' offense.

"The burden rests on the offense. We have been nothing short of awful offensively, and it's time for them to take the responsibility for getting things going," he said.

Skeels juggled the lineup Saturday night, starting four reserve players at the bottom of the order.

Elio Sarmiento, making his first start of the season at third base, went 2-for-3 and second baseman Skyler Stromsmoe singled in the fifth and took second when the outfielder booted the ball.

Charlie Culberson went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, but that's all the offense Augusta mustered.

Hagerstown starter Bradley Meyers (6-4) got the win after pitching 6w innings of shutout baseball. He allowed five hits and struck out five.

Clark (6-4) picked up the loss. Reliever Wilmin Rodriguez threw two perfect innings in the eighth and ninth.
