Favre's indecision benefits fans
GreenJackets plan to retire then reinstate QB's number

Minor league baseball teams are well known for incorporating current events news in their wacky promotional schedules.

The San Francisco Giants' Triple-A affiliate, the Fresno Grizzlies, celebrated Second Amendment Night on Friday in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court's recent decision on the matter, and the Dunedin Blue Jays of the Florida State League offered Superheroes and Villains Night on Thursday in response to the release of the latest Batman film, The Dark Knight .

During their next homestand, the Augusta GreenJackets will put on a current-event promotion of their own that may trump them all.

Capitalizing on the recent controversy surrounding Brett Favre and a possible return from his four-month old retirement, the GreenJackets announced that their Aug. 4 game against the Savannah Sand Gnats will be Brett Favre Night at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The team will retire Favre's number, then reinstate it the next night and flip-flops will be given away at the gate.

"I've been trying to think of something to do on this for the last two days," GreenJackets general manager Nick Brown said. "Hopefully this will be fun for the fans."

The GreenJackets will also offer a seat upgrade to box seats for anyone wearing a Brett Favre jersey. Fans wearing a cheese head will get a free bratwurst.

"We are also allowing any fan that purchases a ticket between now and Aug. 3 the opportunity to reuse that ticket for the Aug. 4 game," Brown said in a news release. "Just because your game is over does not mean your game is over."

ALL-STAR ADD: Portal High School product Brooks Brown was a late add to the Southern League All-Star Game last week. The former Georgia Bulldog was added to the Double-A South All-Stars roster to replace the recently promoted Carlos Torres .

Brown pitched one inning of relief. The 6-foot-3 right-hander gave up a solo home run in the sixth inning as the North All-Stars beat the South team 6-1.

DID HIS JOB: Former Westside star Jason Childers also pitched in an all-star game last week.

The reliever for the Charlotte Knights was a member of the International League squad in the Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday night. Childers surrendered only two walks in a hitless, scoreless eighth inning to pick up a hold and left the game with a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately for Childers and his teammates, the Pacific Coast League team rallied for six runs in the top of the ninth to win.

UPS AND DOWNS: Former GreenJacket Kevin Pucetas had a busy week.

The San Jose Giants pitcher was a member of the World Team in the Major League Baseball All-Star Futures Game, was named Pitcher of the Week for the California League, then suffered an injury to cut his next start short.

The 6-4 right-hander made the Futures Game with a 7-0 record and 2.49 ERA. He threw a scoreless ninth inning in a 3-0 World Team win last Sunday and returned to San Jose for his scheduled start Thursday.

Pucetas threw a scoreless first inning but was forced to leave the game in the second inning after taking a line drive off his wrist against the first batter he faced.

ONE MORE AWARD: San Francisco Giants' No. 1 draft pick, Buster Posey , still hadn't signed a pro contract as of Friday, but the highly touted prospect was given the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award last week.

The former Florida State catcher led the NCAA in batting (.472), slugging (.908) and on base percentage (572), while guiding his team to the College World Series.
