Mascot hall of fame?

Web posted Thursday, July 17, 2003

Every dog has his day. Well, except for Uga VI. The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame's decision to reject a nomination for the famous mascot has left him in the doghouse and the Bulldawg Nation howling with anger.

The stubby, white English bulldog clad in red and black has pawed its way into Georgia fans' hearts, becoming a symbol of victory and pride. However, many fans are failing to realize that's all Uga is - a symbol.

The hall of fame's decision was indeed logical and well-made. Started in 1956 as a prep-sports hall of fame, the GSHF has become a heaven for all athletes and coaches to dream of, eventually opening its pearly gates to collegiate, amateur and professional players. Induction into its hallowed halls calls for significant contributions to Georgia athletics, which neither Uga VI nor his ancestors has accomplished.

Fans seem to be missing the obvious - only people can be inducted. While our loyalty to old Uga pushes us to fight for his recognition, his induction would diminish the grandeur of admittance. The nomination form calls for nominees to exhibit character, integrity and sportsmanship. Clearly, our furry friend is not capable of displaying these human characteristics.

It is unfair for Uga, who basks on the sidelines of University of Georgia football games and occasionally poses for a few pictures, to be placed next to legends such as Hank Aaron or Vince Dooley, whose devotion and skills have reshaped the dimensions of athletic competition.

The Ugas have served as Georgia icons since 1956, bringing wide recognition and familiarity to the school. We will always be appreciative to the pound for this. But until a hall of fame for mascots is created, we should leave those institutions acknowledging human greatness for people, and let Uga continue to be the adored symbol he is.
