The leader we deserve

Augusta didn't ask much of its legislative delegation this year. Just one thing, really: Do something about the dysfunctional Coliseum Authority.

They did nothing.

Oh, they hemmed and hawed and traded ideas. But they ultimately couldn't agree on a solution. So they did nothing.

Since then, the Coliseum Authority continued on its zigzag to nowhere, and even saw one member arrested after a fight with a community activist.

We have the legislative delegation to thank for that.

Well, no thanks.

Augusta needs more dynamic, action-oriented and forward-looking lawmakers.

We need A.K. Hasan.

Hasan, a longtime community activist and sometime public official, is running in Tuesday's primary election for the state House of Representatives from District 123.

Given that the incumbent was part of the Do-nothing Delegation, voting for Hasan is a great opportunity to break with the past and move the city ahead.

A.K. Hasan will bring an action-oriented approach and impressive resume to the job of state representative. Even before being the youngest ever elected to the Richmond County Board of Education in 1981 -- and the first black and youngest board member elected president in 1983 -- Hasan was making a difference. He was a prime influence behind the movement to start a magnet school, and participated in the first lottery to select students for C.T. Walker Magnet.

As president of the school board, Hasan helped discover and eliminate a $5 million deficit that might have put the district in danger of being seized by the state.

He served another distinguished stint on the board in 2006, after having also served on the former Augusta City Council.

A lifelong Augustan and former Marine, Hasan has already made a difference in the city and in education. We know his energy and dynamism will make a difference in Atlanta, too.

This is a year in which "change" has become the political catchword. Well, A.K. Hasan has been a change agent since he was a young man graduating Lucy Laney High School -- at the age of 16.

He's still got that kind of energy, just a whole lot of experience to go with it.

Hasan isn't just a go-getter; he's also as much of a people person as you'll find. He's already gathering the views and interests and concerns of his prospective constituents in District 123, and he'll be particularly well-suited to pursue those concerns and interests among his fellow legislators.

Burke County voters, most of whom are in District 123, should unquestionably vote for Hasan: He is so bullish on expanding Plant Vogtle that he has formed CSRA Citizens for Nuclear Energy. The incumbent seems to take a dim view of the issue -- rather oddly, since Hasan notes new reactors at Vogtle could mean 4,000 temporary jobs and more than 600 permanent ones.

Most of all, Hasan has shown he can get things done. And we've seen precious little of that from our delegation.

Please vote in the Democratic primary Tuesday for A.K. Hasan for state representative.
