The event was highlighted by a performance from headline musical act Edwin McCain, sports demonstrations and the lighting of the official Georgia Games cauldron.
Other performers included the Augusta Dance Stars, the Rhythm and Class Cloggers, the Fort Gordon Honor Guard, Creative Impressions Dance Team and the Fort Gordon Band. Each sport was represented as participants marched across the floor in the parade of athletes.
The Georgia Games started Friday with adult baseball and will continue through July 21. More than 40 sports will be held throughout the Augusta area.
Before the program began, businesses set up booths along the concourse to conduct interactive games with spectators. Pamela Smith, of Fort Discovery, explained the anatomy of a baseball and some of the physics behind hitting to onlookers.
"A lot of people play baseball, but they really don't know how the baseball works," Ms. Smith said.
During the program inside the arena, Georgia Games sports demonstrations were put on by athletes representing lacrosse, fencing, rowing and disc golf.
"We have people competing on an international level in the state of Georgia, but unfortunately, we're not as well known as some sports," said Brian Barnes, assistant coach of the Augusta Fencers Club. "This is a good opportunity to allow our athletes to show off their skills because they work really hard to develop them."
Mr. McCain, whose parents once lived in Augusta, sang a few of his most popular hits, such as I'll Be and I Could Not Ask For More.
"I made my first album here years ago at Studio South," Mr. McCain said. "I used to sleep in my van outside the studio. I just want to say thanks for having me."
