3 jailed after armed robbery attempt

Three Augusta men remained in the Richmond County jail Sunday night in connection with an attempted weekend robbery at a Gordon Highway ATM.

Carl Crawford, 18; Rodriguez Crawford, 21; and Christopher McNair, 20, face charges of attempted armed robbery, according to Richmond County sheriff's Investigator Brandon Beckman.

Police said the men tried to rob someone at the Bank of America ATM at 1749 Gordon Highway.

Carl Crawford is also charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, Investigator Beckman said.

Mr. Crawford is accused of firing a handgun twice toward the ground, wounding the victim in the foot and leg, police said.

Shots fired at nightclub; 1 wounded

Police are seeking a man who entered a Gordon Highway nightclub and opened fire early Saturday.

Witnesses said a man entered the rear door of the Flamingo Roadhouse at 2320 Gordon Highway at 1:22 a.m. and started shooting. An employee was struck by one of the bullets, said Richmond County sheriff's Investigator Brandon Beckman. The shooter fled through the club's rear door.

County, school board hold hearings on taxes

Rollback hearings to set Columbia County's millage will start Tuesday.

Two of the state-mandated three public hearings will be held at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Evans Government Complex at 630 Ronald Reagan Drive.

The third hearing will be at 5:30 p.m. July 15. The county commission will likely set the millage rate after the final hearing.

State law requires rollback hearings when tax-collecting agencies plan to accept additional income generated by growth.

The school board started the first of its own three rollback hearings last week. The final two meetings are scheduled for Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the Board of Education, 4781 Hereford Farm Road, Evans. The school board will likely set the millage rate after the final hearing Tuesday.

Residents must boil water in New Ellenton

About 500 New Ellenton area residents are being warned to boil their water until Wednesday because a city-owned well malfunctioned, city officials said Sunday.

Jermaine Holmes, of the New Ellenton Public Works Commission, said several customers near Dry Branch and Talatha Church roads reported having water that was orange and had a gritty texture.

"We think the well may have been struck by lightning and the casing was cracked," Mr. Holmes said.

For details, call the New Ellenton Water Commission at (803) 652-2862.
