My youth is escaping without giving me anything it owes me.
-- Ivy Compton-Burnett
Another great Atlanta Peachtree Road Race is over, and once again I have spread the news for a local cause, proudly displaying my blue Augusta Boys & Girls Clubs T-shirt to every Atlanta TV camera I could find.
I took my time, too, so they could get a good look. That's probably why my 10-kilometer time was slower than last year. But you know how it is ... people see your fancy T-shirt and they want to stop and talk.
Well, almost everybody.
Somewhere around Mile 2, I looked to my right to see Arthur Blank , the owner of the Atlanta Falcons. He wore a neatly attired running outfit and jogged with a smooth pace.
"Hi, Mr. Blank," I said cheerfully.
He did not respond, so I shrugged it off and sprinted ahead.
Must have been thinking about this year's team.
MORE SUMMER TRAVELS: We hear more from our summer vacation travelers who are sharing postcards.
Ernest and Martha Odom , of Evans, send greetings from both Chicago's Wrigley Field, where they saw the Braves lose, and from Miller Park in Milwaukee, where they are on the final leg of a summer baseball tour. They write: "We could have seen 10 GreenJacket games for what this game cost."
Here's a postcard that asks a question: "What's more wild than a grizzly? ANSWER: Richmond Academy teachers in Alaska." Susanne Dykes , Candy Thompson , Peggy Wong and Sharon Doe send a card describing a fun trip.
And here's a fun idea. The Badkes -- Mike , Ann , Michael and Julianna -- send a card from Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia. They write: "This is the first stop of our family road trip from Augusta, Ga., to Augusta, Maine. We will be going to the 13 original colonies."
The Oligs send a postcard from Salem, N.C., the last stop on their summer tour. They write: "We logged 2,250 miles so far. Loved breaking in the new camper. Can't wait to decide on next year's itinerary.
They also sent cards from upstate New York and Gettysburg National Military Park, which they say -- along with the tour -- is wonderful.
Bonnie and Bud Coward , of Aiken, send greetings from Wyoming. They say the temperature when they arrived in Jackson Hole was 39 degrees. Snow almost every day. "The locals call it late spring," they write.
Jimmy and Jane Jackson also say it's snowing in Yellowstone.
Christy Jones says she left North Augusta Mayor Lark at home and took sister Kimberly to Boston to visit daughter Lauren .
Luke Quarles sends a card from Boston, as well, with plans to travel on to Bar Harbor, Maine, and Montreal.
Sending a card from Hilton Head Island, S.C., and their annual beach trip were Judy , Summer , Tim , Darby , Pierce , Tripp , Meredith , Stacy , Courtlyn and Kelsey. They are playing on the beach during the day and shagging at night and eating good seafood. "A great time with the family!"
TODAY'S JOKE: Did you ever notice: When you put the two words "the" and "IRS" together it spells "theirs"?
