Future of Wood team in jeopardy

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Eddie Wood's family has been in the racing business on the NASCAR circuit since 1953. Team owner Eddie Wood said he's not sure it will last beyond this season.

Wood said he doesn't have sponsorship lined up yet for next season and without it, the family operation might have to close.

The team hopes to have two full-time Nextel Cup Series cars next year - one for Ken Schrader and a second for Wood's son, Jon.

"We can't make a lot of plans until we get all those (sponsorship) deals in place," Wood said. "Ideally, we'd like a Fusion for Jon and another for Ken. Honestly, right now I can't begin to say what we're going to do next year, but I think we'll have something out there."

DODGE NOT LEAVING: Dr. Dieter Zetsche, chairman of DaimlerChrsyler, made one thing clear at Daytona International Speedway: Dodge is not leaving NASCAR.

Despite huge losses by the car company, Zetsche said Dodge is committed to racing its Charger and plans to bring back the Challenger in the future.

"We have no reason to leave whatsoever," he said. "We are very happy with NASCAR. It is a great platform, and Dodge is the right brand to race NASCAR."

SAID AND ROUSH: Boris Said created a stir by winning the pole for last Saturday night's Pepsi 400 and an even bigger stir by finishing fourth in the main event.

But what makes the road-racer's success so interesting is the deal he has with Roush Racing.

Said bought a Ford Fusion from car owner Jack Roush and an engine from the Robert Yates Racing-Roush Racing shop.

Roush provided technical help in return for driving lessons for the road courses for any of Roush's full-time drivers.
