Patrons cite many reasons to rejoice

The Fourth's late-evening showers didn't discourage many from proudly showing their red, white and blue and celebrating independence downtown Friday.

Dozens of folks hid under Broad Street's awnings, while others braved the downpour at the Augusta Common.

Mike Isdell stood in the rain on Broad Street registering to vote Friday evening. It was the perfect way to celebrate Independence Day, he said.

"It feels good to be in a country where you have the right to do that," the Augusta resident said. "So many people in other countries don't have that right."

More than 90 people registered at the drive held by the Barack Obama for President organization, said Shirley Woodley, who started registering people at about 8 a.m. Friday.

Before the rain hit, a band pounded out Southern rock tunes, the smells of barbecue and catfish filled the air and vendors hawked their wares.

In the middle of all the celebrations were Rhonda Mosely and her daughter, in town from South Carolina to enjoy the festivities and visit family.

But this Independence Day is bittersweet for them. Mrs. Mosely's husband, Garrett, is deployed to Iraq with the Army.

"This day means more to us this year," she said. "It's about honoring those who are willing to put their lives on the line. We miss him."

On the Common, people braved the afternoon heat to enjoy rides, games, music and food.

Ray Pearce watched his daughter Jaylen climb a blue inflatable water slide.

"We wanted to get out and enjoy the holiday," he said. "Normally we might go to the beach, but this year, with gas prices, we just decided to stay home."

A voice drew his attention back to the water slide.

"Daddy! Watch me," Jaylen yelled from the top before sliding down head-first.

"All in all, staying home wasn't a bad decision," he said.
