Police hunt attacker in deadly shooting

Police searched Monday night for the gunman in a fatal shooting near Cherry Tree Crossing Apartments.

Johnny W. Davis, 65, of the 200 block of Memory Drive, was killed at about 7 p.m., outside a home in the 1600 block of Luckey Street, police said.

Richmond County sheriff's Investigator Brandon Beckman said the victim was shot at point-blank range. Richmond County Deputy Coroner Johnny McDonald said an autopsy is scheduled for today.

Man is arrested after 15 pounds of pot found

Aiken Public Safety officers arrested a 22-year-old Charleston, S.C., man Monday at the Aiken bus station and seized about 15 pounds of marijuana.

Tyrone Laval Drayton is in jail on a charge of trafficking marijuana. According to a statement, a bus station employee called police to report that a suspicious duffel bag had a strong odor of marijuana.

Rape suspect's vehicle found at apartments

Richmond County sheriff's investigators recovered a vehicle Sunday that belongs to a man wanted on rape charges.

Investigators found a Honda Accord owned by Anthony Holden, 44, at Maxwell House Apartments on Greene Street, according to Lt. Scott Peebles. Mr. Holden is accused of pouring boiling water on a woman at an Ellis Street apartment, tying her up, raping her and stabbing her.

Lt. Peebles said investigators believe Mr. Holden is in the area, and police are asking anyone with information to call the sheriff's office at (706) 821-1080.

Woman, children back at home after scare

Authorities have found a missing Augusta mother and her two children after she alarmed her employer with a text message saying her children were dead.

Lt. Scott Peebles said Kateshia Allen, 21, of the 3000 block of Camak Drive returned home Sunday.

When her employer text-messaged her over the weekend, she responded: "My children are dead." Investigators said one of Ms. Allen's children fell and wasn't moving when she sent the message, but is now OK.

Fire department will hold meeting on fees

The Bath Volunteer Fire Department will hold a public meeting tonight to discuss increasing the department's fire fees to $25.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at the fire department on 115 School Road in Bath.
