TRENTON, S.C. --- A Trenton man found dead by his wife in the couple's home on Sunday afternoon died of a gunshot wound to the head, Edgefield County Coroner Thurmond Burnett said Monday.

An autopsy on Raymond Meriwether, 60, was conducted Monday morning.

"We have a preliminary report from the autopsy in Newberry this morning, and he died from a gunshot wound to the head," Mr. Burnett said. "We don't have all of (the report) to know how many (shots) there were or anything like that. We think it was two, but we don't know. We don't have any suspects at this time, and that's what we're working on right now. We'll know more about it later."

Mr. Meriwether's death is the first Edgefield County homicide of 2008.

Members of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division crime scene unit arrived at the Courtney Road home about 6 p.m. Sunday. A canine team also was brought to the scene.

Police did arrest the victim's son on an unrelated charge of disorderly conduct after an altercation Sunday with another family member. He remained in custody Monday.

Mr. Burnett said the full autopsy report would be released in a week to 10 days.
