The top 15 teams of the 30 teams in the NCAAs made the cut and are invited to the Preview. They include John Engler's Clemson team, Charles Howell's Oklahoma State team and Scott Volpitto's Texas Christian team.
Eric Ledford of Jackson, S.C., a University of South Carolina golfer, could be a fourth Augustan in the tournament. The Gamecocks made the cut in the NCAAs, and Ledford, who was redshirted this season, is expected to make the 1998-99 traveling team.
The Preview tournament is annually held at the course that what will be the tournament site of the NCAA Championships at the end of the season.
Hazeltine has been the host club to two U.S. Opens -- the 1970 event won by Great Britain's Tony Jacklin and the 1991 Open won by Payne Stewart.
IZZO CUP: Georgian Ryan Hybl heads the six-player boys U.S. Izzo Cup team that will take on a team from Sweden June 22-26 at The Legends Course at Chateau Elan in Braselton, Ga.
Hybl, of Colbert, will be joined by fellow Georgian Kris Mikkelsen of Woodstock, University of Georgia signee Eric Compton of Miami, J.C. DeLeon of Tulsa, Okla., Nicholas Loar of Rockwall, Texas, and Jason Allred of Ashland, Ore.
Beth Bauer of Valrico, Fla., heads the girls team. Bauer, who finished 16th in the this season's LPGA Nabisco Dinah Shore, will be joined by Leigh Anne Hardin of Martinsville, Ind., Angela Jerman of Columbus, Ga., Cimmie Shahan of Spring Grove, Pa., Randi Meadows of San Antonio and Kelli Kamimura of Burlington, Wash.
The teams were determined by a ranking system which awarded points for top finishes in American Junior Golf Association and other All-American tournaments in 1997. Each team had one captain's pick. Allred was the boys captain's pick and Kamimura was the captain's pick for the girls team. Mark Brazil is the captain of the 12-player team.
HOUNDSLAKE: The team of Will Parrott and Mark Rowe won the member-guest with a plus 26 total on the Stableford system. David Carroll and George Flanders finished at plus 23 and Chris Phillips and Randy Dangerfield were plus 20.
POINTE SOUTH: The team of Mary Oglesby, Henry Oglesby, Ralph Graham and Darren Newman won a Ladies Choice tournament with a best two ball with handicap 113. Finishing second, one shot back, was the team of Stella McDonald, Don McDonald, Bob Fanning and Ron Shirey.
Joe and Sherry Keel won a Couples tournament in a scorecard playoff with Regis Costeable and Palm Goddard. They shot net 63s.
Holes-in-one
HOUNDSLAKE: Bruce Cullom had two aces in a two week span. The first one came on the 178-yard 12th hole at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence. The second came at Houndslake's 165-yard third hole on the Dogwood side. The witnesses for the second ace Dave McElrath, Will Parrott and Mark Rowe.
Vic Wyszynski aced the 130-yard eighth hole with a 6-iron shot. The witnesses were Walt Guy and Joe Stout.
MIDLAND VALLEY: Harry Gray aced the 172-yard eighth hole with a 4-iron shot. The witnesses were Jim Morgan, Bob Stevens and Ed Marsh.
Don Wilkins aced the 171-yard 13th hole with a 7-iron shot. The witnesses were Mike Higdon, Darryl Riles and Paul King.
Midland Valley member Tom Schinskey aced the 155-yard 17th hole at the Palmetto at Myrtlewood course at Myrtle Beach, S.C., with a 9-wood shot. The witnesses were James Ukoski, Gary Lewis and William Horn.
AUGUSTA CC: Frank Capers aced the 162-yard sixth hole with a 6-iron shot. The witnesses were Mason Clements, Dan Mathney, John Bates and Don Lundquist.
Jeff Wilks aced the 220-yard 12th hole with a 3-iron shot. The witness was Randy Metz.
JONES CREEK: Don Blackman aced the 157-yard third hole with a 5-iron shot. The witness was Chris Odem.
Will Greene aced the 185-yard 11th hole with a 5-iron shot. The witness was Matt Perara.
PINE RIDGE: Dan Booth Sr. aced the 12th hole. The witness was Dan Booth Jr.
Brandon Rowland aced the fifth hole.
Michael Padgett aced the seventh hole. The witnesses were Dan Booth Sr., Van Perry and head pro Kurt Kaltz.
AUGUSTA GOLF COURSE: Danny Cawley Sr. aced the 197-yard 17th hole with a 3-wood shot. The witnesses were Charlie Wilson and Tony Kearns.
Nathaniel Wells also aced the 17th hole with a 4-iron shot. The witnesses were Michael Stokes, Larry Harris and Clois Herndon.
AUGUSTA NATIONAL: Before the course closed for the season in late May, David Shields aced the second hole on the Par-3 Course with a sand wedge shot. The witnesses were Paul Shields, Paul May and Jimmy Richards.
POINTE SOUTH: Joe Keel aced the 108-yard fourth hole with a sand wedge shot. The witness was Sherry Keel.
WEST LAKE: Mitch Holt aced the 159-yard fourth hole with a 9-iron shot. The witnesses were Ed Luke, Ron Patterson and Hale Hubbard.
CEDAR CREEK: Charles Watson aced the 160-yard 16th hole with a 6-iron shot. The witness was Wade Widener.
RIVER CLUB: Keith Downs aced the 186-yard 13th hole with a 5-iron shot. The witness was David Aull.
THOMSON CC: Jaye Jordan aced the 142-yard sixth hole with a 8-iron shot. The witnesses were Pete Bales, Andrew Duckworth, John Williams and Marion Jordan.
Eagles (on Par 4s)
FOREST HILLS: Dave Gardiner eagled the 18th hole, knocking in a pitching wedge shot. The witnesses were Joe Kelly, Dick Westbrook and Charlie Gibson.
Gary Guest eagled the 18th hole, sinking a 7-foot putt after driving the green. The witnesses were Dick Hartney, Charlie Gibson and Stan Martin.
AUGUSTA GOLF COURSE: Granderson Howard eagled the 13th hole, knocking in a sand wedge shot from 85 yards out. The witnesses included Bruce Bates and Nicky Murray.
AUGUSTA CC: David Hooks eagled the third hole. The witness was Vendie Hooks.
Dr. Evan Barr eagled the 13th hole. The witness was Gary Williamson. Two holes prior to the eagle, Barr also eagled the 11th hole, a par-5.
GOSHEN: Doug Coleman eagled the eighth hole, knocking in a shot from 110 yards out. The witnesses were Chip Fulmer, Joey Barksdale and Bert Durand.
HOUNDSLAKE: Joe Romano eagled the 305-yard second hole on the Dogwood nine, holing out a sand wedge shot.
THREE OAKS: Jim Swanson eagled the 344 yard 11th hole, knocking in a 6-iron shot. The witnesses were Earl Tingle and Dewey Kitchens.
