Bluegrass guitarist Dan Tyminski, the singing voice for George Clooney in the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou?, will perform free Saturday in downtown Greenwood, S.C., for the Festival of Flowers Bluegrass Festival.

Mr. Tyminski is headlining the inaugural event, which will be at Countybank Plaza from 7 p.m. to midnight.

His singing and playing of Man of Constant Sorrow on the soundtrack of O Brother Where Art Thou earned Mr. Tyminski a Country Music Association Single of the Year Award and a Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals.

Also performing at the Greenwood festival will be singer-songwriter Ronnie Bowman and bands New Dixie Storm and OverDrive.

Mr. Bowman, a former member of the Lonesome River Band, co-wrote the Brooks & Dunn song It's Getting Better All the Time, with Don Cook, and the Kenny Chesney song Never Wanted Nothing More, with Chris Stapleton.

GOODBYE DANNY DAVIS: George Nowlan, better known as Danny Davis of the Nashville Brass, died June 12 at age 83.

The native of Dorchester, Mass., began his early career in classical music but eventually turned to country music, working as a producer and singer.

He formed the Nashville Brass group in 1968, and they immediately had a huge crossover hit with their version of the Hank Williams' song I Saw the Light . They followed it with another hit, Wabash Cannonball .

I first interviewed Mr. Davis in September 1973

"Our records have had tremendous sales in France," he said. "Through all the ups and downs of the music industry, the one stabilizing factor has been country music. Even The Beatles admit they were heavily influenced by the Everly Brothers. People ask me why country music is so popular, and I say that the Nashville writers are the only ones writing with a good story line and good basic songs."

Don Rhodes has written about country music for 37 years. He can be reached at (706) 823-3214 or at don.rhodes@morris.com.
