We condense letters; most, as published, won't exceed 300 words. A letter must include the writer's name and city, which will be published, and an address and telephone number for verification, which will not be published. Writers may be limited to one letter every 30 days. Open letters, letters to third parties and poetry are not considered. Letters from people living outside the Chronicle's circulation area usually are not considered.

Defends candidate over `distortions'

Editor, The Chronicle

The recent letters by E.J. McCarty and Kathy Thomas really typify what ails American politics. Both of these individuals have continued to air a domestic violence charge against Ron Beul when the charge was in fact disorderly conduct - a far cry from violence or abuse.

Incidentally, I've known Ron personally and professionally for 14 years. Both Mr. and Mrs. Beul discussed the whole case forthrightly on the Austin Rhodes radio program and adequately put it to rest.

The second untruth ties Mr. Beul and the Solid Waste Management Authority of Columbia County to Renaissance. The facts here clearly show that the Columbia County Commission canceled the exploratory arrangement with Renaissance in July 1994; and the authority did not even come into existence until November 1994 - four months after the arrangement was put to rest. Hence, Mr. Beul played no role whatsoever.

These two distortions as promulgated by the Harbin and Mays network are absolutely unnecessary; they are designed to destroy an opposing candidate. We need to look at real issues in this election, such as the voting records and positions regarding the Education Reform Bill, the 2001 budget - designed to spend all and borrow more, decisions on spending lottery money on HOPE scholarships for criminals, secret meetings to establish a new form of government for Columbia County, open government and ethics reform.

Mud-slinging and lies need to be put aside once and for all so we can best evaluate who is better qualified to serve and who is more sensitive to and better informed on the issues that are important to the voters of Columbia County.

Richard Rountree, Evans
