Re Busing middle and high school children together in Columbia County:

I have never seen such unconcerned attitudes for our school children as I have seen in the Columbia County School Board meeting, when the members decided to bus middle school with high school students.

Ray Hicks, a board member, saw 12 honor students that night (salutatorians and valedictorians), and he referred to this small, less-than-one-percent of high school kids and stated that high school kids could be a good influence on the middle school kids, especially since middle school kids are so rambunctious. I could not believe the naivete of this man, who assumed the other 1,000 high school kids are like the ones he saw.

The board members think they are going to solve something by putting the middle school children in the front of the bus. There were drugs on high school buses 20 years ago when I rode the bus. I guess he wants kids to learn about sex, drugs and other immoral behavior at a younger age. Isn't this why we have separate schools and learning material for these ages?

I, for one, will be driving my 11-year-old to middle school each day. I would much rather have 11- and 12-year-olds protected as long as possible from the actions they will learn and observe from high school kids until they are at the maturity level where they can handle and know the appropriate actions to take when they are confronted with the behavior. I am still a mother who attempts to shield her daughter from age-inappropriate material and actions until they reach the age and maturity level in which it can be explained why these actions or behaviors are wrong.

I wish our school board members believed that way. We can see that they are not going to look out for the best interest in our children. In addition, I think we need school board members who have children still in the school system. Then maybe they will have a vested interest in the well-being of our children instead of saving money.
