Opposes development in canal area Web posted June 6, 1999
Say it isn't so.
I strongly support the efforts of those attempting to arrange the purchase of the Brandenburg property on the south bank of the Augusta Canal as reported in The Chronicle on June 1. The canal is a natural and historic resource already prized by countless Augusta residents. Moreover, it will unquestionably become the most important tourist attraction in the area. It will also serve year 'round as a magnet for business and industry in their search for a city that can offer the quality of life they seek for their employees
Commercial development of this particularly scenic part of the canal will have a serious negative impact on the spirit and financial well-being of our community. Good luck to the newly-formed Canal Development Committee in its efforts to find funding in order to buy the property and add it to the National Heritage Area. Perhaps then the canal's beauty could remain a joy forever.
