DETROIT --- How much is the automotive market being affected? Ford's perennial top-selling vehicle, the F-Series pickup, was dethroned by not one, but four small cars in May sales.
High gas prices, the weak economy and low consumer confidence took their toll.
Toyota's Corolla and Camry and Honda's Civic and Accord sedans outsold the F-Series, which saw monthly sales plummet 31 percent last month. The trucks have been the best-selling trucks for 31 years and the top vehicles overall for nearly as long.
The trucks also have topped the charts each month since June 2005, when the Chevrolet Silverado pickup took a brief lead, said Tom Libby, of the Power Information Network. The last time a car topped the monthly charts was Ford Taurus in December 1992.
Here are the 10 best-selling vehicles in May: Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford F-Series, Chevrolet Silverado, Nissan Altima, Ford Focus, Chevrolet Cobalt and Chevrolet Impala.
