Museum expanding art programs

Leah Watson believes art is important for her two daughters.

"I've been going to the Artrageous Sundays and have been taking them since they were really little," said Ms. Watson, who brought her daughters, Jasmine Farrar, 10, and Briana Farrar, 11, to the event at the Morris Museum of Art on Sunday. "I love art. I think it's a shame when kids don't know about art."

Held the first Sunday of each month, Artrageous Sunday programs combine an aspect of the latest Morris exhibit with an art project.

Sunday, Ivey Coleman talked about the A. Aubrey Bodine exhibit, which features black-and-white photographs by Mr. Bodine, who worked for the Baltimore Sun for 50 years. The exhibition runs through July 13.

As part of the art activity, children took Polaroid photographs of objects outside the museum on Riverwalk Augusta. Then they went inside to draw a picture from their photograph using charcoal. The emphasis of the project was light and shadows, Ms. Coleman said.

Nicha Ludy, a rising fourth-grader at Monte Sano Elementary School, chose an outdoor sculpture as her subject.

"It has lines that are colorful," she said of her reason for choosing the sculpture.

The free Artrageous Sunday programs are from 2 to 4 p.m. This summer, Artrageous is just one of the programs offered.

An art break camp will be held during June and July. The theme of the first session is element explorers. June 16-20 will be for ages 6-9, and June 23-27 will be for ages 10-13.

The theme of the July session is gallery detectives. July 14-18 is for ages 6-9 and July 21-25 is for ages 10-13. All sessions meet from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost is $80 for members and $100 for nonmembers. To register for camp, call Michelle Schulte at (706) 828-3865.

Another special monthly program is Stupendous Saturday, which will be from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, June 21, featuring Lee Bryant, also known as That Puppet Guy, in Big Bad, Little Red, Pig Show. The program is free.

For information on other Morris Museum programs, call (706) 724-7501.
