An Augusta man accused of impregnating a girlfriend's teenage daughter was arrested last week in New Orleans.
James Wiley, 38, of the 700 block of Bennock Mill Road, was charged with one count of child molestation and was extradited Thursday. Police said that sometime in late 2004, Mr. Wiley sexually assaulted the victim after she returned home from school. Richmond County Investigator Michelle Walden said when the incident occurred the victim was 14, below the 16-year threshold for Georgia's age of sexual consent.
The incident came to the attention of police in January 2005 when an employee of the Augusta Pregnancy Care Center notified authorities, Investigator Walden said.
"During her conversation (with the nurse) she said her mother's boyfriend did it," Investigator Walden said.
The case was put on hold until the child's birth in June 2005. DNA tests on the mother and child were completed earlier this year and substantiated the victim's claim that Mr. Wiley was the father, Investigator Walden said.
"I found out that the subject was a 99.9 percent match," she said. "He was the father of the child."
Investigator Walden said she had been in contact with the suspect shortly before he fled.
"He ended up leaving the state of Georgia and went to Louisiana and we had to have him extradited back," she said.
