Last week's blast from the past did not get past our readers. Quite a few identified the What Is It? vehicle as the Cadillac Allante, which was sold from 1987-93. The convertible pictured, by the way, was the 1990 model.
Tony Hattaway, of North Augusta, was the first reader to identify the car and wins an umbrella from The Augusta Chronicle. He said he remembers when the car was introduced because it existed roughly the same time as the competing Buick Reatta, a coupe and convertible.
Other readers knowing the Allante (by various spellings) were:
AIKEN: Howard Jones , who wrote of the Allante: "Just as it was doing better in sales, it was discontinued ... It seemed to serve as a test bed for new technology, not just at Cadillac, but at GM (General Motors) as a whole."
ALLENDALE, S.C.: David Porter
APPLING: Neil Foreman
AUGUSTA: Vance Reeves, Sam Cruse, Joyce Anderson, Stewart Cooke, L.C. Ivory (who has one but wants to sell it) and Chad DeMeyers, who wrote: "I think even back in the late '80s and/or early '90s, the car's retail price was nearÂ$50,000."
EVANS: Jerry Paul and Ken Zeigler
GRANITEVILLE: Robert Blackburn and Albert Edwards , who wrote: "I loved that car in (the 1989 movie) Tango and Cash !"
HEPHZIBAH: Jimmy Williams ("I got one.")
HOUSTON, TEXAS: Mike Dickson , who said: "The thing that was somewhat unusual during this time frame was that the body was made overseas in Italy and the powertrain was provided by GM."
MARTINEZ: Ed Lake, Don Cook, Toby MacKendree and Michael Wesse, who said: "It was a fine car."
NORTH AUGUSTA: Wade Dawkin s and Russ Thirkell, who wrote: "Toooo easy!!!!!!!!"
SANDERSVILLE, GA.: Tony Anthony
THOMSON: Ricardo Morales
WASHINGTON, GA.: The Rev. Warren B. Peek
NO CITY GIVEN: Jim Burke and Tommy Seay .
This week's What Is It? photo is a 2008; tell us the make and model. E-mail glynn.moore@augustachronicle.com or call (706) 823-3419 and leave a message; give us your city and phone.
The deadline is noon Wednesday. If you have any comments about the car, we will run as many as we can. The names of correct guessers will be published Friday, and the first will get a little gift from The Augusta Chronicle.
