An Army sergeant at Fort Gordon was charged Monday with shooting at an Augusta couple in a van after an argument outside a nightclub.
Sgt. Derrice White, 30, is accused of threatening the couple with a gun outside Harpo's nightclub on Deans Bridge Road on May 4 and then following them to Windsor Spring Road and Lucy Street, where he fired at the 1991 Chevrolet Astro Van, said Investigator Ken Rogers, of the Richmond County Sheriff's Office. No one was hurt, he said.
On Monday, deputies arrested Sgt. White on the post and charged him with two counts each of aggravated assault and terroristic threats.
Sgt. White is a power generator repairman for the 249th General Hospital, according to Fort Gordan spokeswoman Marla Jones. He has been stationed at the post for about two years. The soldier has been living between two addresses on Wylds Road and Lumpkin Road, police said.
Investigator Rogers gave the following account of the May 4 incident:
Latisa Parks said she was in the parking lot of Harpo's at about 2 a.m. when Sgt. White came outside and asked where to find her cousin.
Ms. Parks told him not to lean on her vehicle, a comment that led to an argument. Ms. Parks' husband, Alexander Richardson, came outside and joined the argument. The soldier told him, "You must want to get shot."
Sgt. White walked to his vehicle and got a .380-caliber handgun but was stopped by another woman. The couple drove away, but the soldier followed their van until they reached Lucy Street and Windsor Spring Road.
"The soldier leans out (the) window, levels the gun and fires at the van," Investigator Rogers said.
The bullet whizzed by the van, the investigator said. Both drivers sped off in different directions.
A report filed by the couple led to an investigation and Monday's arrest. Sgt. White was being held in the Richmond County jail on Monday night without bond.
