Pizza theft lands man in prison
20-year-old gunman pleads guilty to robbing deliveryman of pies, $25; judge gives him 10-year sentence
AIKEN - The gunman who robbed a pizza delivery man and left a trail of garlic bread sticks to his hide-out was sentenced Monday to 10 years in prison.
Kevin Woodward of Trenton pleaded guilty Monday to allegations that he called a Domino's Pizza from a convenience store pay phone in Gloverville on Feb. 18, ordered a pizza, then robbed the deliveryman of the order and $25 when he showed up.
The only problem with his plan: He and a friend left a smelly trail of bread sticks that helped police dogs find them. The bloodhounds sniffed the pair to a nearby manufactured home, where the suspects were found hiding underneath with the stolen cash and several uneaten pieces of pizza, prosecutor Ben Moore said.
The deliveryman was taken to the suspects and identified Mr. Woodward as the man who put a .38-caliber handgun to his head, Mr. Moore said.
In court Monday, defense attorney Andy Anderson said his client had a drug problem, a possible result of being born to a drug-addicted mother. His mother gave custody of him to his grandparents. Mr. Woodward, 20, of Trenton, underwent drug counseling while he was out on bond, the attorney said.
``This is a crime of sheer stupidity,'' Mr. Anderson said. ``He got into some drugs ... and he robbed a pizza man.''
Police had a strong case against Mr. Woodward that included a confession, shoe prints and a bloodhound trail. But the Solicitor's Office agreed to a negotiated plea for the 20-year-old defendant that includes 10 years in prison and three years of probation once he is released. Circuit Judge James R. Barber III also ordered Mr. Woodward to get his GED and undergo drug treatment while in prison.
Co-defendant Joey C. Smith, who also is charged with beating an elderly Augusta man in April, has not gone to trial in the pizza case.
