The Augusta Chronicle named two interim editors to permanent positions Tuesday.

John Boyette was named sports editor, and Mike Wynn was named metro editor. Each had filled his respective position on an interim basis since late March.

``I'm confident Mike and John can take our newspaper to the next level of excellence,'' said Dennis Sodomka, executive editor. ``It's a great feeling to be able to promote from within when key jobs like these become available.

``I look for great work from both departments.''

Mr. Boyette, 34, began his Chronicle career on the copy desk in February 1996. He since has served as South Carolina editor and metro editor.

Through the years, Mr. Boyette has covered the area's major sporting events -- most notably, the Masters Tournament -- extensively.

``I'm excited to return to the sports department, where I began my career,'' Mr. Boyette said. ``I look forward to continuing The Chronicle's record of extensive and excellent coverage, not just for the big events like the Masters, but for all sports.''

Mr. Wynn, 44, has worked at The Chronicle for nine years at numerous positions. His posts have included work as a business writer, projects reporter, South Carolina editor and deputy metro editor.

The newspaper nominated him for a Pulitzer Prize in 1993, when he wrote a series of articles investigating allegations of sexual abuse of female inmates at the Emanuel County Jail.

``It's an exciting opportunity,'' Mr. Wynn said of his promotion. ``I look forward to the challenge.''
