Seniors have many area resources
Letter to the Editor

In my position as a broker who counsels Medicare beneficiaries about Medicare Advantage plans, I have come in contact with many seniors and the local agencies who strive to help them. Augusta is tremendously blessed to have a superb network of agencies and a host of sincere, generous individuals advocating for our older population.

The Senior Citizens Council and Area Agency on Aging can direct seniors to activities that will provide constructive outlets for their talents and energies while providing a modest stipend. Some programs even train seniors as certified nursing assistants.

These organizations can guide seniors to resources in the community, whether it be Meals on Wheels, Home Health Services, providing supportive rails and slip bars, etc. These organizations offer classes that explain Medicare, Social Security, Part D drug plans and more. These agencies are one-stop shopping centers for seniors with questions or specific needs.

The Augusta-Richmond County Recreation Department offers seniors marvelous avenues for socialization and fitness. Many of the community centers have luncheons which include games, bingo, guest speakers and programs. These centers are wonderful -- full of laughter and neighborly chatter. Several have exercise rooms, especially the Henry H. Brigham Senior Center, that would make Jack LaLanne envious!

Augusta has so much to offer its seniors. If you or a senior that you love needs a little joy or laughter in her life, don't waste precious time -- visit one of these facilities or agencies today. The only thing you'll stand to lose is some loneliness and, if you're lucky, a few pounds!
