BRAVES: Activated infielder Omar Infante from the disabled list to start Thursday and placed catcher Brayan Pena on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained back.

Infante, acquired in an off-season trade with the Chicago Cubs, was in the starting lineup against San Diego as the starting second baseman and leadoff hitter. He had one hit in three at-bats.

The move with Pena was made retroactive to Monday. Pena was unavailable to play or pinch hit the past three days due to the sore back.

METS: Outfielder Angel Pagan is day to day with a bruised left shoulder after a rough stretch in New York's 12-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday.

Pagan started in left field against the Dodgers and somersaulted into the first row of the box seats to grab Andre Ethier 's foul fly in the first inning. He remained on the cement for a few moments but returned to his position, rubbing his left shoulder. He left in the third with tightness in the shoulder after sliding headfirst into second with a stolen base.

DIAMONDBACKS: Arizona left-hander Doug Davis said he has been pronounced cancer free after a sophisticated test showed no spread of the disease.

Davis said he got the news from surgeon Dr. Bob Evani , who removed the pitcher's cancerous thyroid gland April 10.

Davis will have two rehab starts for Triple-A Tucson.

TWINS: Manager Ron Gardenhire rejoined the team on Thursday after missing the past five games to be with his family in Oklahoma after the death of his brother.

Gardenhire said he was still trying to cope with the loss of Mike Gardenhire, 54.

"I'm still kind of numb," he said before a series finale against the White Sox. "It's just all kind of surreal right now. I'm just trying to figure out what I need to do to get back into this thing."

ORIOLES: Baltimore has a new shortstop. Manager Dave Trembley said Freddie Bynum , activated from the 15-day disabled list, would replace Luis Hernandez .

Infielder Eider Torres was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk to make room on the roster.

"Right now, Bynum is the starting shortstop on this team," Trembley said before the Orioles opened a four-game series in Kansas City. "What that means is he will be the regular guy that plays."

A poor play by Hernandez on a potential double-play grounder in Oakland on Wednesday night led to Baltimore's fifth consecutive loss and persuaded Trembley to make a change.

BLUE JAYS: Toronto placed shortstops David Eckstein and John McDonald on the 15-day disabled list, two days after both were injured in a loss to Tampa Bay. Utilityman Joe Inglett was promoted from Triple-A Syracuse.
