Shirley Godbee was ready to enhance her garden Saturday.

"I'm so excited," said Ms. Godbee, who had a cart load of plants she purchased from the 11th annual Pendleton King Plant Swap and Sale.

"Look at this mother-in-law's tongue," she said as she held out one of her purchases. "It was only $2."

The low prices weren't the only good part of the event.

"They take time to explain how to take care of it," said Beverly Johnson, another shopper.

Kay Mills, the secretary of the Pendleton King Park Foundation and a lifetime master gardener, started the project as she gained her master gardening credentials.

"It just gets bigger every year," she said.

Many of the CSRA Master Gardeners attending the event brought plants to sell. Proceeds benefit projects at Pendleton King Park. Also, there was an area of plants people could swap for other plants, and other plant vendors attended the event.

Another plant sale at Pendleton King Park is scheduled for Saturday, May 31. Hydrangeas Galore will begin at 10 a.m. and end when plants sell out. The event also features a tour of the hydrangea gardens at the park.

Proceeds from the sale will benefit the park.

Over the past few years, many volunteers from a variety of organizations have undertaken projects to benefit the park, said Mrs. Mills.

The Art Factory collaborated with children from Monte Sano Elementary School to create a sculpture garden last year and a musical garden this year at the park.

Members of the Junior League of Augusta installed two playgrounds.

CSRA Master Gardeners planted a hydrangea garden. And many others have worked to upgrade the touch and smell garden and the arboretum.

Pendleton King Park, on Troupe Street, is a 64-acre bird sanctuary owned by the trustees of the King family and leased to the city annually for $1, said Mrs. Mills. The city's trees and landscaping department maintains the park.

A public hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, May 22, at the park. The purpose is to seek the community's input on further development at the park.
