A Richmond County sheriff's deputy was in serious condition Tuesday after being hit by a car on Jackson Road near Walton Way.

Maj. Richard Weaver said Deputy Barry Morrison, 47, was sitting on his motorcycle and using a radar gun to monitor drivers' speed when he was hit by a Jeep Wrangler. He suffered a broken leg and broken jaw, Maj. Weaver said. A Medical College of Georgia Hospital spokeswoman said the deputy was in serious condition Tuesday night.

Michael Antonio Smith, 43, of Eighth Avenue, has been charged with failure to maintain lane. Police believe Mr. Smith fell asleep at the wheel.

Maj. Weaver said Deputy Morrison has been with the sheriff's office for 11 years.
