ROCKIES: Right-hander Kip Wells will have surgery today for a blood clot in his right hand.
The 31-year-old Wells was placed on the 15-day disabled list, effective April 28. He was 1-1 with a 2.29 ERA in 10 games and one start.
In 2006, Wells had a blocked artery in his right arm. The artery had to be replaced by a vein taken from Wells' leg.
No date has been set for his return.
REDS: Bronson Arroyo , Cincinnati's No. 2 starter, hoped there was a physical explanation for his awful start Sunday against the Atlanta Braves.
But after getting checked out by trainers Monday, he was told that, physically, he's never been better.
"I feel good," Arroyo said Monday. "I don't even have one ache. nothing I can complain about. I don't even have like, 'My knee's bugging me, I've got a headache.' Nothing."
DIAMONDBACKS: Left-hander Doug Davis felt strong during a 65-pitch simulated game on Monday, only 26 days after surgery for thyroid cancer.
"I could have gone out there for a couple more innings at least," said Davis, who had his thyroid and surrounding tissue removed on April 10. "I really felt like I was in the shape I need to be in to compete."
The 32-year-old Davis is scheduled to pitch for Triple-A Tucson on Saturday or Sunday and will make one more start in the minors before rejoining the rotation.
TIGERS: Jacque Jones was designated for assignment Monday by Detroit, which had promised a lineup shake-up going into a homestand against the Red Sox and Yankees.
Jones hit just .165 with a homer and five RBI in 24 games for the Tigers, who acquired him during a busy off-season from the Chicago Cubs.
To take Jones' spot, Detroit purchased the contract of outfielder Matt Joyce from Toledo.
BLUE JAYS: Less than one year after he had Tommy John ligament replacement surgery on his left elbow, B.J. Ryan has been cleared to pitch in consecutive games.
After starting the season on the disabled list, Ryan was activated April 13. He got his fifth save of the year Monday.
INDIANS: Plan to cut Jason Michaels , one of several veterans with batting averages hovering around .200.
The Indians, batting just .242 as a team, will designate Michaels for assignment and recall outfielder Ben Francisco from Triple-A Buffalo before today's start of a three-game series at the New York Yankees.
RED SOX: Placed outfielder Brandon Moss on the 15-day disabled list and recalled right-hander Craig Hansen from Double-A Pawtucket.
Moss had an appendectomy Saturday in Boston and was released from Massachusetts General Hospital a day later. The designation is retroactive to Saturday.
