ATHENS, TENN. - An upgrade of automated fog-warning signs on a stretch of Interstate 75 where a 1990 pileup killed 11 people should be finished in June, a Tennessee Department of Transportation spokeswoman said.
The $232,900 upgrade of the four signs between Cleveland and Athens includes larger space for messages about visibility problems and larger flashing lights that activate when sensors detect dense fog, a highway official said.
In December 1990, a fog-related pileup of 99 vehicles on I-75 near Calhoun killed 11 people and injured 50.
Transportation Department spokeswoman Jennifer Osborne said the project is slated for completion by June.
"Work originally started in spring 2003, but we had to hold off on it because there were problems with the wiring," she said.
Passenger rush sinks boat near nude beach
AUSTIN, TEXAS - A double-decker party barge capsized when dozens of passengers moved to one side of the boat as it approached Texas' only public nude beach.
Sixty people on the boat were rescued Sunday from Lake Travis, including two with minor injuries, authorities said.
The accident happened during Splash Day, a semiannual event held at the clothing-optional area by the Austin Tavern Guild, a gay and lesbian bar association.
Witnesses said all of the people aboard the barge moved to one side after it was tied up at Hippie Hollow beach, creating uneven distribution and making it tilt.
Travis County sheriff's spokesman Roger Wade said it was unclear why the passengers all were on one side of the barge.
Police charge teens in death at festival
NEW ORLEANS - Four teenagers have been arrested in the killing of a man attending the city's music festival, the second time in three months that juveniles have been blamed for a slaying at a major New Orleans tourist event.
A 14-year-old boy is accused of fatally shooting 57-year-old Daniel Breaux on Saturday as he left the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Mr. Breaux was shot in the head after he apparently ignored demands by the gunman and three other teens for money, police Superintendent Eddie Compass said at a news conference Monday.
The shooting suspect, two 15-year-olds and a 16-year-old were booked on charges of first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery.
