COLUMBIA - A Columbia woman has been charged with murder and arson in connection with a fire that killed her adult son at their home, police said Monday.
Carolyn Glover, 60, was charged in the fire that started at about 8 p.m. Sunday, police spokesman Skot Garrick said.
Julius Anthony Jones, 43, who used a wheelchair, died in the fire.
His body was found in a rear bedroom.
Ms. Glover was seen by a witness carrying a red plastic container just moments before the fire was spotted, Mr. Garrick said.
Man hit in leg with pipe dies, police say
ANDERSON - A Wiliamston man died after being struck with a pipe, Anderson County authorities said.
Cory Johnson, 34, died shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday in the emergency room of Anderson Area Medical Center, Anderson County Deputy Coroner Charlie Boseman said.
Mr. Johnson was hit in the leg with the pipe during a fight.
He later complained of chest pains, Mr. Boseman said.
The man who hit Mr. Johnson on Saturday has been charged with aggravated assault and battery, Mr. Boseman said.
Records show officers were put on suspension
ROCK HILL - Disciplinary records obtained by a newspaper show that three York County sheriff's deputies were suspended more than four years ago after a woman alleged police misconduct.
The internal investigation found that two officers violated department policy on personal integrity.
Sheriff Bruce Bryant said "numerous of the accusations were unfounded."
Sheriff Bryant acknowledged in 2000 that officers were suspended after the internal investigation but would say only that it was a personnel matter.
Navy plans to make family housing private
GOOSE CREEK- The Navy plans to privatize family housing at the Charleston Naval Weapons Station.
The deal could go into effect as soon as January 2006.
Once the deal is complete, a private company will own, manage and maintain the station's 1,983 family housing units.
Marine and Navy personnel in Beaufort already have a similar arrangement.
About two years ago, Actus Lend Lease began taking control of family housing at the Marine Corps Air Station and the Parris Island Marine Recruit Depot.
