DeMint should be next S.C. senator

During 2002, I had the honor of being the Aiken County co-chairman for Gresham Barrett's U.S. House race. As we have seen, Mr. Barrett has done an excellent job while in Washington and has remained true to his principles, values and convictions for the betterment of South Carolina and the United States.

With the announced retirement of Democratic U.S. Sen. Ernest Hollings at the end of this year, my focus has shifted to electing a conservative GOP replacement for his open seat.
In looking at the Republican candidates vying for the nomination in the upcoming June 8 primary, I find the person who best matches the qualities I see in Rep. Barrett is U.S. Rep. Jim DeMint, serving out his last term representing the 4th District of South Carolina.
Just like Mr. Barrett, Mr. DeMint is a true conservative who believes in the principles of limited government, a strong national defense and traditional family values. He has earned the Friend of the Taxpayer Award from Americans for Tax Reform, the Spirit of Enterprise Award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association.
Most importantly, as a dedicated father of four, he has earned a 100 percent rating from the Family Research Council and is a member of the Adoption Hall of Fame for his successful work in promoting adoption.
Most notable, Rep. DeMint has accumulated one of the strongest records in support of President Bush's conservative policies. In fact, according to the highly respected National Journal, Mr. DeMint has earned the most conservative voting record among the South Carolina delegation.
In the upcoming Republican primary, I am casting my vote for someone who will serve us well in the Senate, just as Mr. Barrett has served us well in the U.S. House. My vote will be cast for Jim DeMint.
Robert G. Gossett, Graniteville, S.C.
