YANKEES: Jorge Posada won't need surgery on his injured right shoulder but will be sidelined for at least five weeks.

Team physician Dr. Stuart Hershon examined the 36-year-old catcher this week, as did orthopedist Dr. James Andrews and New York Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek . A shoulder specialist, reviewed scans Friday.

New York also is missing third baseman Alex Rodriguez (strained right quadriceps) and starting pitcher Phil Hughes (fractured rib).

Hughes had his eyes examined Friday and will start wearing glasses when he pitches. He has been bothered by glare during night games and has had trouble picking up signs from his catcher.

TWINS: Manager Ron Gardenhire will miss the three-game weekend series against Detroit after his older brother died suddenly at his Oklahoma home.

Mike Gardenhire , 55, died on Thursday, prompting Ron Gardenhire to return to his home state to be with his family for the funeral. The cause of death was not announced.

RAYS: Placed right-hander Gary Glover on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis and recalled outfielder Justin Ruggiano before Friday's game against the Red Sox.

BREWERS: Cut former All-Star closer Derrick Turnbow , who was 0-1 with a 15.63 ERA in eight games this season and gave up six runs in two-thirds of an inning at Chicago on Wednesday.

He had 39 saves in 2005 and 24 the following year, when he was picked for the NL All-Star team. But he suddenly lost his form at midseason in 2006.

- Pitcher Yovani Gallardo tore a ligament in his right knee trying to avoid a collision near first base on Thursday, and might need surgery.

CARDINALS: Pitcher Mark Mulder minimized unsightly numbers in his fourth rehab start Friday and anticipated he'll join the rotation when his 30-day assignment is up.

NATIONALS: Put right-handed reliever Chad Cordero on the 15-day disabled list with a torn lat muscle and activated catcher Paul Lo Duca off the DL.

Cordero is expected to be sidelined four to six weeks by the injury, which is to a muscle below his pitching shoulder.

MARLINS: Placed outfielder Josh Willingham on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 28, with a lower back strain before Friday's game against San Diego. Outfielder Brett Carroll was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque.
