Interracial pair report assault

An Augusta couple reported a violent assault Saturday night by three men who said they were upset about their interracial dating.

Jeffery Wright, who is black, suffered a fractured nose and a concussion after he was attacked with a tire iron outside the Pump-N-Shop on Walton Way, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office. His girlfriend, who is white, told police the white men threw beer at them, got a tire iron from their Jeep and attacked her boyfriend.

Mr. Wright was treated at University Hospital and released. Witnesses told police that the attackers had several tattoos and that their Jeep had a Richmond County tag that included the number 5854.

Security tape records break-in at business

Juveniles broke into an Augusta business during the weekend and crashed a 2003 E-Z-Go golf cart into a tractor, damaging both vehicles, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

Video cameras recorded three boys breaking into a back area of Time Transportation, on Sand Bar Ferry Road, early Saturday. The boys used keys they had to start the golf cart and ram it into a 1995 GMC tractor, a police report states.

The cart's front left bumper struck the right side of the parked tractor. No arrests were made Sunday.

Bartender says she was hurt by customer

A bartender at an Augusta pool hall reported an assault by a customer early Sunday, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

Miranda Slick, an employee of Gooney's pool hall on Wheeless Road, told police she was arguing with the customer about his bill at 1 a.m. Sunday when the man grabbed her by the right arm and pushed her in the chest. She said the man drove away in a gold vehicle.

A deputy noticed scratches and red marks on the victim, a police report states. No arrest was made Sunday.

Vandals break glass, steal auto stereos

Police are investigating a weekend rash of vehicle break-ins at Champions Pines Apartments in Augusta by thieves apparently looking for car stereos.

According to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office, windows were broken on six vehicles in the 700 and 1200 blocks of Champions Pines Lane on Friday night and Saturday morning. Stereos were stolen from two vehicles.

The owners of the other vehicles reported nothing missing, but some damage was done to dashboards when the thieves tried to remove stereos.

Confederate Memorial Day observed today

Some Georgia state government offices will be closed today in observance of Confederate Memorial Day, according to the Georgia Merit System Web site.

Government offices in Richmond, Columbia and Aiken counties will be open. South Carolina state government offices will also be open. That state will observe Confederate Memorial Day on May 9, according to the South Carolina Office of Human Resources.

Man reports theft of shotguns, knives

A North Augusta man told police that someone took two shotguns and several collectible Civil War knives from his home early Sunday morning.

Bryson L. Smith, 20, told North Augusta police that at about 1 a.m. he fell asleep while friends were visiting his home in the 1900 block of Courtney Drive. He told police that when he woke up, a Remington 1100 and a 12-gauge shotgun, worth a total of $600, had been taken, and two Civil War knives worth $200 were missing.

Mr. Smith said a PlayStation 2, games, a computer, a DVD player and a cable modem also were missing.
