Retired SRS worker to run for District 4 seat

During a Friday candidacy announcement, David Payne said he's tired of area politicians using the District 4 Columbia County Commission seat as a stepping stone to higher offices.

"I'm not interested in going anywhere else," Mr. Payne, 57, said of his bid to win the seat. "My future is in Columbia County."

The retired truck driver from Savannah River Site made his announcement on the steps of the Appling Courthouse to signify his commitment to that area.

The special election is set for July 15.

Obama blames gas prices on Washington

INDIANAPOLIS --- Democrat Barack Obama on Friday blamed high gasoline prices on Washington and a political establishment, including his rivals for the presidency, that he says hasn't stood up to oil companies.

At an Indianapolis gas station, Mr. Obama said his opponents "mean well, but they've been in Washington for a long time and even with all that experience they talk about, nothing has happened."

Rival Hillary Rodham Clinton derided his promise to take on special interests while rallying students at Indiana University. She also criticized Obama campaign ads that say he doesn't take money from oil companies or their political action committees.

Mr. Obama has accepted money from oil company executives and employees, as has Mrs. Clinton.
