Hopelands' labyrinths dedicated
A-mazing journeys

It can be a place of healing or reflection, or it can be a beautiful vista at Hopelands Gardens.

"It's a metaphor of life's journey," said Sue Broderick, the chairwoman of the Aiken Community Labyrinth Project, explaining the labyrinth at its dedication Tuesday at Hopelands.

"There's no right or wrong way to walk it," she said. "Let children discover it in their own way."

The labyrinth has been in the works for several years. Mayor Fred Cavanaugh recalled meeting with Ms. Broderick in 1999 or 2000 when the idea was first mentioned. He said he was skeptical at the time but now is pleased with the finished product.

"It's an exquisite project," he said.

In March 2006, officials broke ground on the labyrinth, and it was completed in November.

Ms. Broderick said more plants would be added around the site as time passed.

The octagonal labyrinth contains more than 10,000 bricks. The design is patterned after a 13th century labyrinth in Amiens, France.

Labyrinths have been used for about 4,000 years. Records of them can be found on ancient Cretan coins, in the cathedrals of Europe, and in hospitals, churches and gardens around the world, according to the dedication program.

"It helps with stress relief. It helps with the grieving process. It helps people relax," said the Rev. Cathy Cole, who is on the labyrinth committee's board of directors.

"There are three main things people should do as they enter. They should release their burdens. They should relax and be in the moment, and they should enjoy what the gardens and labyrinth have to offer."

Also at the site is a finger labyrinth with instructions in Braille.
