Racing facts

Talladega 500

Where: Talladega Superspeedway's 2.66-mile tri-oval with 33-degree banking in the corners, 4,300-foot front stretch and a 4,000-foot back stretch in Talladega, Ala.

When: 1 p.m. Sunday

Broadcast: Television - Fox; Radio - Motor Racing Network

Last year's winner: Jeff Gordon

Morris news service pick to win: Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Others to watch: Kevin Harvick, Rusty Wallace, Johnny Benson, Jeff Gordon and Dale Jarrett

Notes: The posted awards are $3,842,807. ... A combination of the track's layout and NASCAR rules make most of the cars so equal, every lap is a toss-up. Last October, Dale Earnhardt was 18th with five laps remaining and won. ... Unlike its sister track at Daytona Beach, Fla., where aerodynamics are critical, the key to getting around Talladega is pure horsepower. ... Expect three- and four-wide racing on every lap and at least one crash that wipes out at least 10 cars. ... Talladega is the fastest speedway in the world, but NASCAR rules that restrict horsepower and create drag will keep the qualifying speeds below the 190-mph barrier. Bill Elliott holds the track record with a qualifying lap of 212.809 mph. That lap came in 1987 - before NASCAR mandated the new rules for safety reasons.
