Home not sweet for Jackets

Problems at home continued to plague the Augusta GreenJackets on Wednesday in a 6-5 loss to the Kannapolis Intimidators.

Through 14 games, the GreenJackets are 7-7 overall, but only 1-5 at home.

With 90 percent of the regular season left, manager Andy Skeels said it's not a major concern at this point.

"We've been in the last two games 'til the end," he said. "I don't thing it's anything more than a statistical oddity at this point."

The one-run loss was the second in a row to the Intimidators.

The game started out as a hitter's showcase. After Augusta took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, the lead changed hands three times over the next inning and a half.

Kannapolis starting pitcher Miguel Socolovich lasted only two batters into the third inning before he left with an apparent hamstring injury. Reliever Santo Luis came in to throw five innings and give up three runs on five hits.

GreenJackets starter Steven Calicutt was pulled after giving up four earned runs on six hits in four innings.

The GreenJackets' bats, who fell silent in a series opening-loss on Tuesday night, woke up enough to produce five runs on 10 hits. Nick Noonan went 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI, while Ramon Corona went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

"I guess we would say we got more hits, but I wouldn't characterize it as better hitting," Skeels said. "Situational hitting is what's important, and we missed too many opportunities."

Kannapolis took advantage of its scoring opportunities, scoring six runs on eight hits and stranding two. They were led by Danny Jordan, whose two-run homer in the fourth inning put the Intimidators up 4-3.

The GreenJackets fell behind 6-3 after Jose Martinez's two-out RBI single in the fifth. Augusta got one run back in the sixth on an RBI grounder from Garrett Baker and another run back in the eighth on another RBI grounder by Ramon Corona.
