Ben Fulcher spends his spare time playing video games and doing what normal 17-year-old boys do - but this summer he won't be hanging out with friends. Instead, Ben has earned a chance to study at the University of Cambridge in England.
His high school courses include pre-calculus and chemistry, but Ben says he can finish most of his homework during school and he has never really struggled in his classes. Though he's modest about his accomplishments, his mother and teachers aren't as nonchalant.
"I've never had to motivate him," his mother, Anne, said. "I just thought this trip was junk mail and I decided to open it and it was a chance to study in England."
Ben's English teacher, Ginger Dunker, nominated him for the chance to visit Stonehenge and study Shakespeare at Stratford-upon-Avon.
Agriculture teacher Joe Wilson said Ben's the quiet, creative type he first thought he would have to watch out for in class, but was quickly proven wrong.
"He's just a first-rate kid," Mr. Wilson said. "He's going places, I know that. He always makes excellent grades."
Ben said he hopes to take some psychology courses while at Cambridge. The Cambridge College Programme runs from July 19-Aug. 8 and is in its 21st year.
The trip comes with a price - $5,595, not including airfare or meals.
The family has established a fund for Ben with Al McKay's financial group as they plan for the trip. Inquirers can contact Mr. McKay at (803) 640-1953.
"We knew that this was something important, so we'll find a way," Ms. Fulcher said.
