Recent draft picks and a handful of teenage prospects fill the Augusta GreenJackets' Opening-Day roster, released by the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday.
Only three players from last year's squad return. A vast majority of the faces are new, but the annual success that has brought three consecutive winning seasons to Lake Olmstead Stadium is expected to remain.
"The way I would look at it is someone with a lot more stripes than me feels we have a lot of talented players here this year," GreenJackets manager Andy Skeels said.
At least 14 players on the 25-man roster played for the Class A short-season Salem-Kizer Volcanoes last year and won the Northwest League Championship. Joining them is a group of prospects who played rookie ball last season in Arizona -- including highly touted, 17-year-old first baseman Angel Villalona and middle infielders Ramon Carmona, Charlie Culberson and Nick Noonan.
There's plenty of youth on the team but also plenty of potential. Skeels said the challenge is turning the talent into actual production.
"Think about the difference in taking a group of players one year removed from high school vs. one or two years removed from college," Skeels said.
"Regardless of ability, mentally it's going to be a challenge for these kids."
Villalona, who signed with the Giants in 2006 as a 16-year-old out of the Dominican Republic, is the youngest on the roster.
"He'd be a high school senior now," Skeels said. "For him to be playing at this level so quickly is an indication of his ability."
Among the 11 pitchers on the active roster, Madison Bumgarner, the 10th overall pick in the 2007 Major League Baseball draft, tops the list.
