Boxing club is accepting applications

With more space to train boxers in its new facility on South Carolina Highway 421 in Burnettown, the North Augusta Police Athletic League Boxing Club is accepting registration for new boxers.

"We've never advertised registration," said Jo-Anne Newman, a co-founder and coach at the club. "We usually have a waiting list."

For about 20 years, Mrs. Newman and her husband, Noah, operated the club on U.S. Highway 1 in Langley. That building had about 4,800 square feet.

In December, the Newmans opened a 6,000-square-foot building in Burnettown, only about a mile away from the other location.

Registration is open to boxers between the ages of 8 and 18, and the fee is $38 a year.

"We don't charge to teach boxing; $38 is for the insurance. It's mandated by USA Boxing," she said.

To register, children need a birth certificate and two small photos. Registration will be held at the gym from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Boxers in the club compete regularly in local and state tournaments. Those who fare well advance to regional and national events.

Last year, club boxers Jeffrey Drayton, Brandon Domingue and Amber Bush were named South Carolina Outstanding Boxer of the Year in their respective divisions.

The Newmans offer not only boxing instruction for club members but also tutoring for children when needed.

Mrs. Newman said she wants children to succeed not only in the ring but in the classroom.

Mrs. Newman said there are adult classes as well.
