Testing choice worries teams

Jimmie Johnson's success at Lowe's Motor Speedway - five wins in his past six starts at the 1.5-mile racetrack - prompted the driver to call the speedway "his house."

When the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. picked Johnson to test tires there, it understandably drew a lot of criticism.

The speedway was re-paved during the off-season. Goodyear scheduled a test session to pick tires for the Coca-Cola 600 in May and only a few select teams will have the opportunity to get a jump on the new track. Others picked for the test include Kevin Harvick, Bobby Labonte and Scott Riggs.

The opportunity for an additional test at Lowe's might give Johnson an unfair advantage, some teams said.

Labonte also was picked by Goodyear to test tires at Texas Motor Speedway.

Another issue is NASCAR's new tire leasing program. Teams no longer are allowed to buy racing tires, and they're not allowed to take them home after a race. Goodyear hands out tires before a race and must account for each tire during the event. Each tire is equipped with a sensor to make sure they aren't removed.

RACING AND RASSLIN': Driver Hermie Sadler and former crew chief Jeff Hammond will be part of a six-man tag-team match after Saturday's Craftsman Truck Series race at Martinsville Speedway.

The two will be part of the Total Nonstop Action Wrestling show at the Lowe's Building across the street from the speedway. The upstart wrestling organization comprises former stars from the old World Championship Wrestling and the current World Wrestling Entertainment.

Sadler and Hammond will have Team 3D, formerly known as the Dudley Brothers, as teammates, and they will go against five-time champion Jeff Jarrett, America's Most Wanted and "Showtime" Eric Young.

Three-time racing champion Darrell Waltrip will be the ring announcer.

R&J REGROUPS: After failing to qualify for the first five races this year, R&J Racing moved its shop back to Toccoa, Ga., and plans to spend the next month rebuilding cars.

Car owner Roger Craven said the team needed time to re-evaluate its schedule and concentrate on selected races for the rest of the year.

"We've decided to put everything under the same roof," Craven said. "We're re-organizing and using the rest of the year to rebuild for the future."
