Gala supports programs to mentor young blacks

The 100 Black Men of Augusta will hold its 11th annual Black Tie Gala on Saturday.

"We use this fundraiser to fund our programs for the year. We bring in lecturers for our kids for Saturday Academy; we take them on excursions throughout the community; and we take them out when we participate in parades," said Calvin Thomas, the organization's vice president of operations. "The funds also help with transportation and food for these programs."

The event is also a chance for the young black males the group mentors to meet influential people in the area, Mr. Thomas said.

"It's a great opportunity for our kids because we have distinguished members of the community come out to the event each year," he said. "The kids get to meet the people they see on TV and read about in the newspaper and talk to these people in person."

Each year, the organization recognizes people who have helped to make the community better, Mr. Thomas said. In the past, members of the arts community, professional athletes from Augusta, legislators and members of the media were recognized.

This year, the organization is going to recognize some of its own.

"We wanted to honor some members of our organization who are doing something in the community in addition to being a part of this organization," he said. "I wouldn't call it a pat on the back, but we just want to recognize our members who are making an impact."

Although the awards are an important part of the annual event, there will be more.

"It's not just an award thing. It's a nice dinner and nice party to raise money," he said. "It's an opportunity for people to dress and have a good time for a good cause."
