The thrill of the chase
Thousands gather to watch the races

The Aiken Spring Steeplechase couldn't be called an absolute success.

There were actually one or two clouds in the sky.

Otherwise, the sun shone brightly and the estimated 30,000 people who packed Ford Conger Field celebrated the second leg of the Aiken Triple Crown in fine fashion.

The event has steadily grown in popularity, attracting folks from across the region and even international patrons.

Gonzalo Martinez was visiting from Argentina this weekend to see a love interest. By happenstance, he ended up at the Steeplechase.

He was glad he did.

He said he was struck by the number of people who attended, comparing the race to a Formula 1 event in his homeland, where people from all backgrounds come together.

The Argentine ate, drank and gambled.

"I felt the event was 100 percent North American. The national anthem, the way everybody sang it, the food, the shouting, the luxury. For one event, you saw the whole thing."

Unfortunately, Mr. Martinez left with light pockets. He placed wagers on several races but won none.

"It is part of the game," he said. "It didn't hurt."

As for locals, the event was as stellar as some could remember.

This was the 40th time the Spring Steeplechase was held in Aiken.

Jan Feller has attended at least six times. She spent Saturday sharing food, laughter and good spirits with family and friends. "I thought it was a great day."

O'Neil Courtney said he's watched the Steeplechase evolve into a major social event in the years since he first attended in the late 1960s.

And what makes for a perfect Steeplechase for Mr. Courtney?

"Just being out here with family and friends and having a good time - tailgating," he said. "(And) watching the ponies run."
