RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico --- Bo Van Pelt never has much planned for World Golf Championship weeks.
That might change, though, after he opened with 8-under-par 64 on Thursday to take the first-round lead in the inaugural Puerto Rico Open.
Because the 32-year-old Van Pelt doesn't play many WGC tournaments, such as this week's CA Championship at Doral, he usually takes a break before his next tour stop.
But with only one full tournament under his belt since mid-February, Van Pelt changed his routine and headed to Puerto Rico.
Van Pelt certainly had a good time at Trump International Golf Club. He shot his best round since last June to take a two-stroke lead over Ted Purdy and Kyle Thompson.
Five players, including Jerry Kelly, were another stroke back at 67.
MADEIRA ISLANDS OPEN: In Santo da Serra, Madeira Islands, Sven Struver shot 6-under-par 66 for a one-stroke lead after the first round of the European Tour event.
Struver, whose last win was in 1998, opened with a birdie, then added six more birdies before finishing with a bogey on the 18th. Hennie Otto (67) had five birdies at the Santo da Serra Golf Club in Portugal.
Michael Lorenzo-Vera and Gregory Bourdy and Peter Gustafsson and Fredrik Widmark were two shots back.
TRIBUTE: In Charleston, S.C., LPGA Hall of Famer and South Carolina native Beth Daniel will be honored by the Ginn Tribute tournament.
The $2.6 million tournament, hosted by Annika Sorenstam, will take place at RiverTowne Country Club in Mount Pleasant from May 29 to June 1.
Daniel was inducted into the LPGA Tour and World Golf halls in 1999.
She has won 33 times on the LPGA tour and was named captain of next year's U.S. team for the Solheim Cup.
Nicole Castrale won last year's event.
