Festival's another jewel in Crown

AIKEN - It's horses and hors d'oeuvres, spring hats and sunglasses - the Aiken Triple Crown has finally arrived.

Although the main attraction of this year's spring event is obviously the races, there are other activities to be enjoyed.

The third annual street festival, offering food, drinks, contests, street performers and other family amusements, will be from 6 to 11 tonight at the Newberry Street Festival Center in downtown Aiken.

In addition to local bands that will perform, the Tams, best known for their smash hits, Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy and What Kind of Fool (Do You Think I Am) will play at 8 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased at the H. Odell Weeks Activity Center, 1700 Whiskey Road, or at the gate on the day of the event.

Also held annually is the Aiken Steeplechase Ball, which features a silent auction. Organizers predicted a sell-out for the March 21 event. Call 648-9641 for information about availability.
