Chiefs duke it out in 'battle'

Columbia County officials trounced their Augusta counterparts, despite SWAT backup, during the inaugural match Monday of a new Lasertron facility at Adventure Crossing.

Owners of the amusement park on Wheeler Road introduced the 6,100-square-foot, two-story laser tag arena during a Columbia County Chamber of Commerce event.

Columbia County won both matches against Richmond County.

Divided into two 15-person teams, players accumulate points by "tagging" opposing players and bases with their phasers.

"I've played laser tag before, but this beat them all," said Columbia County School Board Member Mike Sleeper, who posted the most points of any player. "Pardon the pun, but it was a blast. I can't wait to do it again."

Even with the assistance of SWAT officers from the Richmond County Sheriff's Office, Augusta officials failed to overcome Columbia County's blitz-like tactics.

"The problem is you can't think like a SWAT guy," a bystander said. "You have to think like a 10-year-old."

A 30-minute laser tag session cost $13.99 per person, said Adventure Crossing President Ed Smith. Lasertron also will be included in package deals that might encompass go cart racing, mini golf and rides.

Mr. Smith suggested that anyone wishing to play Lasertron make a reservation by calling (706) 863-3087. It opens to the public on March 27.
