The city is holding its first Triple Crown Street Fair tonight before Saturday's running of the Aiken Trials. It will be a family affair with rides for children and adults, food vendors, street magicians, clowns and the East Coast Party Band on the main stage from 8 to 11 p.m.

There will be other kinds of performances as well, including dance and karate demonstrations, and a horsey area for kids where they can pretend to be cowboys and jockeys on the fastest stick ponies in the South. The Kids' Corral will encourage children to make a horse-related craft that they can take home.

An adult adventure area will feature an inflatable obstacle course and a bungee run.

Aside from a Christmas celebration with the lighting of Aiken's tree, the city hasn't had much opportunity to use its new festival center on Newberry Street. The street fair will be a trial run with downtown merchants, with parking kept open until 5:45 p.m. on the southbound side of Newberry except for the center spaces. Those will be closed at 3.

The fair begins at 6 p.m.

Advance tickets are available at the H. Odell Weeks Recreation Center on Whiskey Road and Citizens Park on Banks Mill Road for $2 for children and $5 for adults. Tickets at the gate will be $4 for children and $7 for adults.
