Busch pushes pedal for win

HAMPTON, Ga. --- Even after his victory Sunday, Kyle Busch kept the gas pedal flat on the floorboard.

He celebrated a victory in the Kobalt Tools 500 much like he raced -- at full speed. He slid his Toyota through the infield grass at 100 mph before starting his burnout.

At 22, Busch hasn't learned how to play it safe. In fact, he might never learn. But everyone who chased him most of the day at the Atlanta Motor Speedway agreed, he's never boring.

"He's amazing," said Tony Stewart after finishing second, 200 yards behind his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate. "It's fun to watch him drive. He will run the car far beyond what it's capable of doing. That's what you want out of a guy."

Third-place Dale Earnhardt Jr. led early, but he couldn't sustain Busch's torrid pace.

Busch led 173 of 325 laps, including the final 40. And in the process, he gave Toyota its first win in the Sprint Cup Series -- and a foreign manufacturer its first win since Jaguar won at Linden, N.J., in 1954.

Busch bounced his car off the first turn wall mid-way into the race, but it did little to slow him down. And on the second-to-last lap, he rubbed bumpers with the lapped car of Dale Jarrett before making the pass.

"Everybody says I'm an aggressive driver. I'm not driving any different. Actually, I've tamed my style," Busch said.

Greg Biffle got within 100 yards of Busch with 15 laps to go, but his Ford faded to a fourth-place finish. Jeff Gordon wound up fifth.

"I had a pretty good chance of catching Kyle, but I just burned my tires up racing Tony," Biffle said.

Carl Edwards' bid for three consecutive wins ended with a blown engine on the 274th lap. He led 33 laps and was 150 yards ahead when white smoke started pouring from his Ford.
