Man got First Amendment backward
Letter to the Editor
Saturday, March 08, 2008

In the letter to the editor "Politics and the Bible shouldn't mix" (March 6), Joseph Zuchowski presents the popular misconception as to the meaning of the First Amendment. He seems to concluded that Christians would want to discard the Constitution "in favor of submission to biblical law." No, we Christians love and respect the Constitution, especially the First Amendment.

The First Amendment reads: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." The Founding Fathers wrote this so that the government could not form a religion.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion." They did not want the government to create its own religion, like they had in England. In addition, the government was not to prohibit the free exercise of their speech, or of the press, or their right to assemble, and they could even petition the government to address their grievances. It is not the separation of church and state. It's the separation of the state from the church!
